Every year across England and Wales, 16,000 people die after injury.  It is the leading cause of death among children and young adults of 44 years and under.  In addition, there are many thousands who are left severely disabled for life.  The TARN foundation in research and their highly skilled team ensures that they provide accurate and relevant information to help Doctors, Nurses and Managers improve their services. Trauma Networks (including Lancashire & South Cumbria), participate in research carried out by the Trauma Audit & Research Network. This means we provide data about your injuries and treatment. This helps us as networks know where we can make improvements and share learning.

TARN - Data Opt Out

The national opt-out policy was introduced on 25th May 2018 enabling patients to opt out from the use of their data for research and planning purposes.
 
TARN has Section 251 approval in place from the Health Research Authority Clinical Advisory Group (HRA CAG), to allow TARN to collect data without patient consent. 
As TARN data is collected and held under section 251 approval and there is no exemption in place, the national data opt-out applies to TARN patients. If you have registered to opt-out of your data being used this will be recorded against your NHS number and the hospital will not submit it to TARN.
